Social security from wife for 84 year old widower

By Terry Savage on January 16, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I’m a teacher in Illinois I am 84. When my wife died they said I don’t get survive benefits from my wife. Is this true

Terry Says

You are now eligible to receive her full benefit, to the extent that it is greater than your own. If you are receiving SS benefits, they will calculate your benefit and hers, and give you the greater amount. But it may take a while for them to get around to processing all these requests! Still, according to the new law, they should be paying you for 2024, and any months in 2025 until they get around to sending you the larger amount.
