Social security now required by e-bay

By Terry Savage on December 23, 2020 | Wild Card

Hello Ms. Savage I am selling items on e-bay regularly and now they are requesting that sellers must supply them with their social security number, a bank, and a routing number. They want to manage our accounts. This seems like way too much personal information for them to have. Can you please look into this and see what is up. They are holding the money I made until I update my account with this info. I reluctantly gave my SS# but now I have to give my banking info. Help! Thanks for your help.

While this is a bit out of my territory, it was easy to research an answer. The Internet is rife with anger of the fact that eBay has extended its Managed Seller policies to small, and infrequent sellers –demanding their financial information.

I’m not sure you can fight this — even all eBay sellers combined might not be enough to create a successful protest. But one blog post I wrote suggested creating a small business and getting a TAX ID for the business, so your personal info isn’t out there.
