Social security on ex spouse’s record

By Terry Savage on February 15, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My ex wife qualifies for a percentage of my social security benefits since we were married for 18 years. My question is, does the percentage she receives reduce my payout or is it separate. Thank you

Terry Says

No, she gets HALF of your benefits (once you start to collect) — as long as you were married 10 years and as long as she has not-remarried. (And as long as her own benefits are not higher.)
It does not impact your Social Security.
And, in fact, if you are currently married, your current spouse is also entitled to collect on your benefits if it is larger than her own.
AND, if you had TWO 10-year marriages, each of those ex-spouses could collect on your record — without impacting your benefits!

And even if YOU, the wage-earner, have not started to collect, your ex(es) can apply once you have reached your full retirement age!
