Social Security on Spouse’s record

By Terry Savage on October 02, 2021 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Am I eligible for portion of ex spouse Social Securitybenefits? I’m 64 married 35 yrs and divorced 3 yrs. May ex is 70 and receives his benefits. Thank You

Terry Says

YES! You absolutely ARE entitle to benefits on your spouse’s record — because you were married more than 10 years and are not re-married (I’m assuming!). Contact Social Security immediately and they will look at your work history and his — and let you know which will provide the larger check. But ask them to calculate the difference if you do wait until full retirement age, if you can, because all future checks will be larger!
