Social Security pay back after death

By Terry Savage on September 17, 2024 | Wild Card

Terry,
My mother in law passed away in August and after she was paid her August social security. They sent a letter requesting pay back for that month and have stopped her September payment. Since it is not a large amount ($800), we thought to just pay it back all at once. Options were monthly installments, mail a check, or put it on a credit card. We are leaning on the credit card payment as it would be done immediately. Thoughts ?
And thank you in advance for condolences, she lived to a feisty 93and in good shape till the last couple weeks.

People are always surprised when that happens — but SS pays a month in arrears. You are not entitled to benefits in the month of your death! Even if you died the last day of the month! But SS is rarely notified in time to stop the next check.

You can repay by credit card (which will be repaid from the estate) or Mail a check, certified/registered– and pay out of the estate funds.
