Social Security Spousal Benefits

By Terry Savage on September 17, 2024 | Wild Card

Am I eligible for spousal Benefits? My wife and I both will qualify for Soc Security (1 more year). I receive a teachers pension and my social security benefits will be less than 50% of hers. Since I am receiving a pension benefit will I qualify for spousal benefits? I will be 62+ and have worked additional jobs my whole life and qualify for Social Security – we have been married for 38 years and I have talked with social security at our local office to affirm my benefits. Thanks Terry

You went to the wrong place to get an explanation of your benefits. SS gets it wrong much of the time. Since this is a specific situation, I urge you to go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com and input all your information and that of your spouse. It will calculate your best claiming strategy.
Yes, you will get spousal benefits — BUT the timing is important. And yes, those benefits will be reduced by the offset for your teacher’s pension. It will be interesting to see what the program tells you vs the info you got from SS!!
