Social Security spousal benefit
Good Morning Terry,
Is it true that a spouse can receive half of their spouses SS while both are still alive. I started drawing my SS when I turned 62. My husband started drawing when he turned 66 and 10 months. His SS is 4 times the amount of mine. And if it is true, how do I go about changing mine?
Terry Says
If you had waited until YOUR full retirement age, you would have been eligible to receive half of your spouse’s benefit, assuming it was larger than your own.
But because you made the mistake of taking SS early, your benefit is permanently reduced!
I never rely on SS for good answers to the “what should I do” question. Instead, go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com and run the program to get the correct answer as to whether your reduced share of his benefit is larger than your own.
