social security start date

By Terry Savage on January 03, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Hello Terry,
I will be 70 in May. My friend told me to wait until July to file for social security benefits. He said I will receive 6 months of benefits in a lump sum if I take this filing course. Is he right?
Many thanks,

Terry Says

No, that’s a ripoff we exposed in our book Social Security Horror Stories. If you do that, it leads to lifetime lower monthly benefits. Tell your friend he was a sucker!

Sign up for SS two months before your birthday, to start at age 70 and not before.

Social Security benefits start the month following the birthday. When the birth date falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, the payment is issued on the second Wednesday of the month following the birthday month1. The application process can take several months, so depending on when you apply, your Social Security Administration benefits may not begin until after you meet the age eligibility requirements2. Your first payment will typically not be credited until the first month after the month of your qualifying birthday.
