Ask Terry Questions social security starting at 70

social security starting at 70

I am turning age 70 in mid-September of this year. Will start SS benefit starting October 1, life only option. SS says to apply in June. Can you briefly explain about maximizemysocialsecurity.com? It looks like a software you buy and put in information for projections. Thank you.

Terry Says

Yes, you should apply a few months early, and ask them to start benefits in your birth month.  But they pay one month in arrears, so your first deposit will come in October if your birthday is mid-September.   Make sure they do not start your benefit before you reach age 70!!

Not sure why you would need to check on the amount of your benefit check, since this is a pretty straight-forward case.  Unless you receive a public service pension??  That would imply a discounted check and itmight be worth paying $39 at www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com to find out exactly what you should be receiving.
