Ask Terry Questions Social Security status benefits

Social Security status benefits

By Terry Savage on December 04, 2025 | Social Security

Hi Terry
Our Question is related to filing for social security benefits. My wife filed at 64 and I waited until 70. She is now 73. Can she update her status to 1/2 of my social security benefits?
Thank you

Terry Says

That’s a trick question. Her spousal benefit will always be reduced, because she took her own benefit early. AND, she does not get half of your current benefit — only (a reduced) half of what your benefit was at your Full Retirement Age, 66+ years! (She does not get the benefit of your larger check for waiting!)

The only way to calculate the correct amount she could receive is at www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com. Pay the fee and get the correct advice, because you certainly won’t get it from SS~!
