Ask Terry Questions social security tax deduction

social security tax deduction

By Terry Savage on October 17, 2025 | Social Security

I am applying for social security next month (Nov). I will be turning 70!
Where on the online application can I designate to have federal taxes taken out?
Thanks for all your advice and I hope you can help me

Terry Says

That depends on whether you are applying in person at a SS office (difficult these days) or applying online. When you fill out the online application you’ll need your bank account number and bank routing number for direct deposit. Plan to keep that account FOREVER, since it is a huge hassle to change your deposit bank!
At the time you set up your deposits, there is an opportunity to ask them to withhold Federal income taxes from the deposit. You should withhold at least 20%, maybe more if you have a lot of other income.
And congratulations on waiting until 70 and getting the largest check possible!
