Ask Terry Questions social security widow’s benefit

social security widow’s benefit

By Terry Savage on October 22, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My husband passed when I was 60. I began collecting my benefit at age 62 and was told by the SSA that I could switch to collect my husbands benefit at my FRA (which is now). But they are giving me a portion of mine and a portion of my husband’s. Is this correct?

Terry Says

They are adding to your base amount any additional amount from your husband’s benefit to bring you up to your full widows benefit — which is his benefit at his Full Retirement Age. It’s just the way they word it that’s confusing. But if you think it’s not the correct amount, then pls write back.

Read this from SS:
Under this provision, known as the “widow (er)’s limit,” the surviving spouse of a Social Security recipient who retired early is entitled to either the late spouse’s (reduced) monthly benefit at the time of death or 82.5 percent of the deceased’s full benefit, whichever is higher.
