social security windfall reversal
My mother-in-law is a retired Illinois school nurse. She receives a pension through the Illinois Teachers Retirement. My deceased father-in-law received an Illinois Railroad pension. It seemed that all of their Social Security was managed through the Illinois Railroad pension, but when my father in law passed away in 2021, my mother-in-laws benefit reverted back to Social Security; however, it was not the same as my father-in-law’s benefit. I am wondering if she is impacted by the reversal of the social security windfall provisions and perhaps her benefit will increase? How can we find out?

It appears that the Fairness Act will cover reductions from the railroad pension system, so now she should get his FULL benefit at retirement. She should apply now, and it should be retroactive to ALL of 2024! But we will have to see how long it takes SS to reprogram and catch up with those deposits.
