Sole Proprietor Unemployment?

By Terry Savage on April 03, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, My husband and I are sole proprietor’s, each with a separate business. He is a Dentist who had to close his office, he is the only employee, and has been for years. Dr. “do it all!” I have had NO business, since my clients have shut down their offices. I am an Interior Designer with my own business, no employees. Can we file for unemployment? Should we do it and claim a spouse or separately, if we can file at all? Thank you very much! We love hearing you on WGN news! Thanks,

I’m assuming you are in Illinois. Looks like you are EACH qualified to file for unemployment as sole proprietors. BUT — the state hasn’t fixed its website (a very BIG deal) to accept those applications. So don’t look for it very soon. Keep checking back at www.IDES.Illinois.gov.
