Ask Terry Questions Spousal benefits

Spousal benefits

By Terry Savage on May 16, 2025 | Social Security

I’m a retired Illinois teacher. I worked til I was 67 so I took spousal benefits for the 2 years pre retiring & getting a pension. I’m the only person I know that hasn’t gotten the spousal benefits for 2024. When I get online it says my benefits have been suspended. I don’t make enough to cover Medicare part B so once a year I’m sent a bill for my annual payment. I have been to ss office 3 times and spoken on phone to them 3 times too. They tell me everything is in order.

Terry Says

You now need to apply for your own SS benefits. They will not be reduced by your pension. I’m assuming you paid into SS and qualify.
If not, you should be getting half of your spouse’s benefits as long as he is alive, half of his benefits UNREDUCED by your pension. AND, you should have gotten the “windfall” of the full benefit for all of 2024.

And to do this, you’ll have to keep calling until you can get an appointment at Social Security.
