Ask Terry Questions spousal benefits

spousal benefits

By Terry Savage on August 22, 2024 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I was divorced in 2009 after 37 years. I have tried to apply for part of my ex’s benefits, but have problems. Can you direct me to a website?

If you are 62 or older, and were married for 10 years, and did not remarry, you are entitled to your spouse’s SS benefit, or a portion of it, depending on your age. Did you contact Social Security to apply? Are you at your full retirement age (nearly 67), which is the optimum time for you to claim benefits on his account (assuming his benefit is larger than your own)?

If you want help go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com and they will run the numbers for you and give you your amounts and alternative best claiming strategy.
