Ask Terry Questions Spousal protection

Spousal protection

By Terry Savage on March 29, 2024 | Wild Card

My spouse has not been continuously employed since 2008. Just over the last 5 years he has a seasonal job with a minimum income around $3000. He has no pension and no 401K . We are in our early 60’s and I am worried about what my financial future & hardship has for me. I have a good job for 32 years with benefits and have a 401K & pension..what do I do to protect myself with this situation?

Terry Says

Seriously, I’m not sure what you are protecting yourself from. He has been living off your income for the past 15 years. If you don’t like it, you are free to divorce him. And I’m not kidding around. You will be supporting him for the rest of your life. If you don’t like that outlook, take steps now.
