Ask Terry Questions spousal social security benefit

spousal social security benefit

By Terry Savage on October 31, 2024 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My husband is 71 and started taking his Social security benefit last year. I’m 64 and did not work long enough to have my own SS benefit. I thought about applying for Spousal Social Security and I know it won’t be 50% of my husbands, since I have to wait until I’m 67. So, I’m wondering if I should take the reduced amount, but are there any reasons that I shouldn’t? Would it effect the amount I would receive in the future if my husband is no longer living? Thanks Terry. I love listening to you on WGN.

Please, please immediately go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com and run the numbers using your own info and that of your husband to get the strategy to maximize your benefit. There are too many moving parts here for me to give you advice.

And I wouldn’t trust SS to give you correct advice.
