Ask Terry Questions Spousal SSA Benefits

Spousal SSA Benefits

By Terry Savage on January 26, 2023 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My wife is a retired principal in Illinois and is turning 65 in March. She was told that her SSA benefit is $87.00 per month due to her TRS pension. We just received a letter that stated she would receive a spousal benefit as well. Is that possible? Thank you in advance for your response.

Terry Says

It’s complicated, but if half of your benefit is higher than her benefit (pre-offset) then she will get half of YOUR benefit, minus the offset. Could result in a larger check.
