SS# used for i.d. purposes
My husband and I opened IRA CD’s with Wintrust this past week. After returning home, I realized our SS#’s are used as Plan i.d.’s and printed on the forms. Following up with the Personal Banker, I am told there is no other option. Please advise. Thank you.

Sad to say, many financial services companies still use SS number as ID — even though it is clearly said that your SS number is not for ID purposes. What company was this? Please write back and let me know, and I’ll ask the question. Might be a good idea for a column on the subject!
Most financialservices companies now offer voice ID or two-factor authentication in place of SS numbers, though you may be asked for the last four digits of your SS as part of an authentication process.
