Ask Terry Questions SSI Income

SSI Income

By Terry Savage on March 01, 2022 | Wild Card

My 15 year old grandson whom I support fully has a lifelong disability. His mother lives in my home and collects a monthly check on his behalf. I want to know if I can charge her rent , as she does not contribute any monies to the household. I’m 69 I work part time and am collecting my social security. Would her rent be considered income for me? Thank you kindly. I watch you on WGN , and you are so knowledgeable and I love when you are on!

Terry Says

You can charge her rent — and you should! And it would not have to be considered income if she is just paying her “share” of expenses (though you call it RENT). Get going. Yu should not shoulder this burden yourself — especially if she is collecting benefits. She should also be working to make money to pay this amount!
