Ask Terry Questions stimulus check for dead relative

stimulus check for dead relative

By Terry Savage on April 29, 2020 | Wild Card

i filed taxes for my dad who passed away in 2019. they mailed me a stimulus check for him in care of me. can i keep and cash? not sure what the rules are when you file taxes for someone who has passed away.

Terry Says

Yes, the heirs can keep the cash. In fact, some of the checks are being mailed in the name of the decedent. He was alive in 2019 and paid taxes so he (or his estate) qualifies. This is NOT the same as keeping Social Security benefits after a person dies.
