Stimulus check for deceased parents
My parents passed away in 2019. We received a stimulus check for them. I heard at first that we can keep it. The bank now says that the IRS says that the checks have to be returned, that the stimulus was for the living. My parents didn’t have an estate account. My older brother and I sold their house to our younger brother. So really they didn’t have an estate. My attorney wrote up a small estate affidavit, but said that the IRS said you have to return it. Do you know for sure if we have to send the checks back?
Terry Says
I spoke to the IRS several times about this issue. At first I was told that it was a payment to those who filed for 2019 — so heirs could keep it. YESTERDAY, the IRS said it is “considering what the policy will be and no decision has yet been made.” And that’s a real quote. So just hang on to the check for a while. The bank doesn’t know because the IRS hasn’t made a decision.
