Ask Terry Questions stimulus check for granddaughter

stimulus check for granddaughter

By Terry Savage on September 26, 2020 | Wild Card

I am writing for my granddaughter. She has never received a stimulus check. She filed taxes and has a job. How can she get the check? Thank you

Big question: Even though she filed taxes, was she declared a dependent on her parents’ 2018 or 2019 tax return? If she was a dependent in 2018 but not 2019 she should still get a stimulus check. But she will have to wait until she files her 2020 return next April. Then she can take it as a credit.

The IRS first looked at 2018 returns and if she was a dependent then, and over 17, she did not qualify. But if her parents took her off in 2019 she will get the money. If she was a dependent BOTH years, she will not qualify for a stimulus payment.
