Stimulus Check Question re dependent

By Terry Savage on April 10, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, I listened to you on the Jim Bohannon show last night and I heard a answer you gave that made me want to ask you again to make sure I heard it right. My Grandson is i High School and is 15 years old and works part-time, he had income tax withheld from his wages, and he filed his federal taxes himself so he could get what was withheld as income tax back as a refund since he did not have to pay any tax since his wages did not put him in any bracket, So I thought I heard you say that since he filed his 2019 taxes, he would be entitled to a stimulus check of $1,200. did I hear you correctly. Thank You for your reply.

Terry Says

He WONT get a stimulus check if he is listed as a dependent on his parent’s return. If they listed him as a dependent on their 2018 return, then they should quickly file their 2019 return without him as a dependent. (Because he is under 17, he would be “worth” a $500 check to them as a dependent minor.)
The IRS may consider him an “emancipated” minor if he filed his own 2019 return. In that case, and that case only, he would get the $1200 check. But there are NO CHECKS FOR ANYONE LISTED AS a DEPENDENT,no matter what age.
