Stimulus check/student loan forgiveness

By Terry Savage on February 15, 2021 | Wild Card

Good Morning! I haven’t yet received the $600 stimulus payment. I was told to file on my 2020 income taxes but I never receive a return b/c it’s offset for student loan payments. Does that mean the Department of Education will also be able to take the $600 stimulus payment from me?
Also, do you have any information on loan forgiveness? Will a meeting bill be passed forgiving these payments? I tried several years ago now to work with loan forgiveness and I was making small monthly payments when it abruptly ended. They couldn’t tell me who was taking over the payments and thereafter my income tax refund began to be offset to care for this debt. Is there anything I can do to prevent them from taking these payments going forward in the future? I hope this isn’t too confusing (I’m asking 2 questions of you)!
Thanks,

Terry Says

The stimulus payments can NOT be taken to offset student loan defaulted payments. So you should file your 2020 return electyronically and claim the $600 on Line 30. Also include your banking information so they can send you the stimulus.
And if you never received the original $1200 stimulus, you can claim it also on Line 30.
We will have to wait to see if Congress passes any kind of student loan forgiveness.
