Stimulus check to decedent
Good morning Terry, my mother in law received a stimulus check for the amount of 2400.00 dollars. This was for her and my father in law. The problem is that my father in law passed away in 2018. She did file a tax return for 2018 and 2019. Should she cash the check or just hang onto it? Thank you for your advice.
Terry Says
You can deposit it. The IRS told me weeks ago to give that advice. I double checked with them earlier this week, and this time the answer was “we are still considering what to do about that”!
Unlike SS claimed after death, this stimulus payment came legally to a person who filed the tax return as specified by the law. I’m reasonably sure they will figure that out!
