Ask Terry Questions Stimulus for Young Adult Dependent

Stimulus for Young Adult Dependent

By Terry Savage on February 01, 2021 | Wild Card

Last year, my son (age 24) did not receive the $1200 stimulus because we claimed him as a dependent on our 2019 taxes (filed in 2020). He was still in college in 2019. He also did not receive the $600 stimulus this January. We will not be claiming him as a dependent when we file our 2020 taxes this year. In exploring the tax forms, I notice there is a place to state if you did not receive either stimulus. Will he be eligible to collect both of these since he was not a dependent in the year 2020?

Terry Says

YES! But he must file his own return. Read this article for details on how he can collect both payments. Be sure you don’t claim him on your return.
