Ask Terry Questions Stimulus money for disabled dependent

Stimulus money for disabled dependent

By Terry Savage on February 15, 2021 | Wild Card

My granddaughter is cognitively disabled (lives off Social security) and I always claim her as a dependent. She is thirty years old and received no stimulus money. She will file her own taxes to get the stimulus. Must she say NOT a dependent on anyone else’s filing? Thus, I cannot claim her for 2020?

Terry Says

Exactly correct. You DO NOT claim her as a dependent on your 2020 return.. That way (assuming her SS provides for at least half of her cost of care) she can claim BOTH the original $1200 AND the current $600 stimulus payments.
