Ask Terry Questions Summer Unemployment as a teacher

Summer Unemployment as a teacher

By Terry Savage on April 10, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi Terry-

Here’s one for you that I am looking for advice on.

I am a public school teacher that collects a paycheck year round. In the summer, I work for my local Park District as a pool manager making $13,000 gross per summer. I count on that income to put towards my children’s college savings and have for years. If my pool doesn’t open this summer due to the pandemic, am I eligible to collect unemployment even though I am still collecting my teacher paycheck?

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

Wow, that’s a great question. Each state sets its own unemployment rules. The new additional $600 from the Federal govt comes on top of what the state gives. If it doesn’t open, I’d just file and see what happens!
