Survivor Benefit

By Terry Savage on July 07, 2025 | Social Security

Hello Terry,
I plan to retire at 66. My husband passed away 15 years ago. We were married for 13 years. I am not remarried. At 66 can I collect on his social security until I turn 70 then switch to my social security which at that time will be the highest amount?

Terry Says

There is a hidden trap in here -=- something Larry Kotlikoff and I wrote about in our book, Social Security Horror Stories. We called it the “widows trap.” The reps trap you into taking “both” benefits, when they do the calculations — giving you the higher of yours or half his.
Please go to MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com to figure out the best claiming strategy, then follow his instructions carefully to do it right.
