Tax refund and past stimulus relief

By Terry Savage on February 15, 2021 | Wild Card

My daughter never got the last two stimulus checks that were issued last year. She has 24 nobody has claimed her and she has worked full-time, so she should’ve gotten them. She did her own taxes last year, and she thinks she might’ve checked the box that said someone could claim her. She can’t imagine any other reason she wouldn’t have gotten those checks. But nobody claimed her. She goes to see her tax accountant lady in a couple weeks and she is concerned that she is going to tell her that there’s nothing she can do. Is there something she can do to retrieve the money she should have gotten last year?Thank you in advance.

Terry Says

She definitely CAN claim BOTH checks on her 2020 return on Line 30. read this article for instructions. I’m assuming she qualifies by earning less than $75,000 on a single return.

She should file immediately, and electronically. And she should input her direct deposit bank information to receive both stimulus payments. If her tax preparer can’t do this for her, then find another one at www.IRS.gov/freefile.
Be sure she says she can NOT be claimed as a dependent, and be careful that YOU do not claim her.
