Tax Refund and Stimulus Check Not Received
I helped my daughter submit her tax return. We calculated that she should receive a refund of $469. She mailed in the paper return on around May 12th. When she checks her refund status on the IRS website, no information is found. She also hasn’t received her Coronavirus stimulus check. She moved addresses since she filed last year. Does that have something to do with the delay? Is there a phone number she can call and speak to a live person about this? Thank you.
Terry Says
Let’s start with the stimulus check. Did you declare your daughter as a dependent on either your 2018 or 2019 tax return? If so, she will not get a stimulus check. But if she was not a dependent in 2019, she can claim that amount as a credit when she files her 2020 tax return next year.
But if she was not declared a dependent on your return in either year, then follow these instructions linked here.
Second, the IRS is way behind processing tax returns submitted this spring. But they ARE paying interest on the amount of refund owed. If she didn’t specify a bank for direct deposit, her refund and the interest amount will be mailed to the address on her return. So wait a few more weeks, because the IRS has said it hopes to get all refunds out this month.
