Ask Terry Questions Tax Returns

Tax Returns

By Terry Savage on October 18, 2021 | Wild Card

I Listen to and enjoy your time on WGN Radio – So informative
I have not received my mother’s refunds for 2019 & 2020 – She passed away in April of 2020 – Checked IRS Where’s My Refund many times and get response of “being processed “ or “ cannot provide any information”, often different each time I check – Any Suggestions? Thanks,

This is a tough one because of her passing. I assume you notified Social Security and that may be why they are still reviewing her return. Typically, I’d just say wait a while longer, because the IRS is so far behind. And this may take even longer than that. Give it till next January (yes, I know that’s forever, but they are paying interest at 3% on delayed refunds.) At that point, if you still haven’t received the refund check with the taxpayers advocate office.

One more thing occurred to me. Was that refund supposed to be direct deposited or mailed to an address where obviously she no longer lives?? What was the address/deposit instruction on the tax filing? If it was supposed to go somewhere and was mis-directed, you can file a claim/trace. But the fact that it was sent/deposited should show up on the Where’s My Payment tool — which, according to your post, just says “processing”.
