Taxes on medical expenses

By Terry Savage on November 02, 2022 | Wild Card

My mother is 87 y/o and we had to install a stairchair for her. None of the insurance ( medicare/ private) cover for the installation of the chair. It is a medical necessity because she can not walk up and down the stairs safely. Can she file this as a medical expense for the 2022 taxes? She earns approximately $25K a year.

Terry Says

Only if her total medical costs (and you can include Medicare and supplement premiums, and any other out of pocket expenses including this chair) exceed 7.5% of her adjusted gross income. I’m guessing you will get a deduction, depending on the cost of this chair.
