Ask Terry Questions Treasury bonds and interest

Treasury bonds and interest

By Terry Savage on March 19, 2023 | Social Security

If I have a 13 week t bill, and set it up fr reinvestment will I be subject to taxes each time it is reinvested, or only at the end of the final investment.

Terry Says

YOu will get a 1099 for interest in any year in which some of your T-bills have matured. So if you bought a 6-month T-bill last November, which doesn’t mature until May, then there was no 1099 for 2022. But there will be one in 2023. And if you rolled again, in May and maturing in November this year, then you would have a 1099 for BOTH period of interest earned.
