Treasury Direct IRA –no way!!

By Terry Savage on April 06, 2024 | Chicken Money

I have an existing Treasurydirect account. I want to. I’ve some of my IRA into t bills, do I open a whole new account at Treasury Direct, or do I just link the new IRA bills to existing account. I’m very concerned about combining any of the retirement money with other t bills

Terry Says

YOU CANNOT OPEN AN IRA AT TREASURYDIRECT TO BUY T-BILLS!!!
I put that in all caps to make sure you and all my readers get the message.

If you want the safety of Treasuries in your IRA, then buy a short-term Treasury-only money market fund, offered by most major mutual fund companies. They act as IRA custodians, and that’s how you get access to Treasury safety through a MMfund.

And some IRA custodians like Fidelity and Vanguard will allow you to buy Treasuries for your IRA through their brokerage division, but this is not a direct purchase from the govt.
