Treasury Direct Savings Bond taxes?

By Terry Savage on February 09, 2023 | Chicken Money

Hi Terry: I purchased a 10K savings bond back in October in order to qualify for the 9% plus interest however there is none showing in my Treasury Direct Account. For personal inquiry and 2022 Taxes would you know when I’m going to see something? Thanks, Dar

Terry Says

For I-bonds, the interest doesn’t get posted until the 5th month after purchase, to accommodate the possible 3 month loss of interest penalty for early withdrawals, and one month for accounting purposes.
You don’t pay taxes on I-bonds until you cash them in. That year you pay ordinary income taxes on all the accumulated gains.
