Ask Terry Questions Treasury Note & Bill

Treasury Note & Bill

By Terry Savage on June 03, 2025 | Wild Card

I inherited T-bill and treasury note. Both were liquidated. What are the tax consequences? I was not related to the deceased. Where can I get the date of death value of these assets? Does the face/base value appreciate?

Terry Says

If you inherited Treasury securities, was the money sent to your account?
Where is the money now?

If it was sent to your account, that is the value of your inheritance — and it is NOT taxed.
If you subsequently invested it and earned money, those gains or interest ARE taxable.

If you still have questions, I need more info to answer. But I hope this solves it!
