TRS income from substitute teaching

By Terry Savage on September 06, 2024 | Taxes & Economy

I have a few hundred dollars in my TRS account when I substitute taught for 6 months in 2005. Can I close that account out without reporting it to Social Security. I have been retired since I was 66 and I am collecting Social Security monthly.

Terry Says

When you close it out, they will automatically send you a 1099 form to include on your tax return. You’ll pay ordinary income taxes on that amount when you file your 2024 return next April. You do not have to report it to Social Security.
