Turning 65

Hi Terry, I will b 65 next month. I am employed by American Airlines. Yes, over 20 employees. Do I have to sign up for Medicaid A. So many different answers. Thx

Terry Says

Let’s start at the start. You mean MEDICARE — not Medicaid! And if you have health insurance through your union or your employer, you should check with them to make sure they do not require you to sign up for Medicare Part A (hospitalization) once you read age 65.

If you are covered by insurance at work, you do not have to sign up for Medicare Part B, or D (drugs) or a supplement. But you will want to do that immediately upon retirement. You don’t have to wait for open enrollment– because retiring can happen at any time, and qualifies you for immediate enrollment at that point.

Until then, keep working and enjoy life. And don’t take Social Security until at least age 67 — or 70 if you can discipline yourself to wait!
