unemployment benefit received — fraud!

By Terry Savage on November 14, 2020 | Wild Card

The state send me a debit card and information about being laid off since Feb. It would be wonderful but I have been at the same job for 43 years and was not laid off. Please advise best way to handle. I do not want trouble with fraud ect.
Thank you

Yes, you have been the victim of identity theft. Someone has likely received benefits online in your name. So read this article and follow every single step –documenting your attempts to report fraud. If someone actually did get benefits sent to them, YOU will get a 1099 form in January informing you that you owe taxes! that’s why it’s so important to follow all these steps. Be sure to look on your credit report for “inquiries” from a bank; that’s likely where money went. And be sure to contact that bank to let them know it was not your account!
