Ask Terry Questions Unemployment benefits

Unemployment benefits

By Terry Savage on January 29, 2021 | Wild Card

I was fired from my job and are on severance until June. is it beneficial for me to go on unemployment too. I know I am eligible from what I have read and I know I will be responsible for taxes on unemployment dollars but NOT on the extra ($300) now. Is that correct?

Thanks!

If you’re collecting severance on an ongoing basis –as opposed to a one-time check — you likely won’t qualify for unemployment benefits. All income from work must be reported.
