Unemployment benefits for self employed.

By Terry Savage on May 29, 2020 | Wild Card

My son has been self employed in IL for several years. In Dec he moved to Nevada and start working and was subsequently furloughed because of Covid. He has learned he wasn’t employed long enough in Nevada to collect and needs to file in IL. Does he file as self employed or does he have to apply for basic unemployment and then again as self employed ? Thanks.

Terry Says

If he is still a resident of Illinois, and was self-employed here last year, and filed a return with 1099 income, he could file at the Illinois site. First he would have to file for traditional unemployment, then use the PUA site when he is turned down for self-employment.
Suggest he only use his self-employment income in IL — not any brief job earnings elsewhere when he files, since they aren’t relevant.
