unemployment for a 67 year old during Covid19
my unusual situation is that I am 67 yrs. old and working part time at a business that has been deemed as “essential “during this crisis. I am not taking my social security benefits because I chose to wait till 70 to give my wife my full benefits because as a substitute teacher for many yrs. she will not receive any. Because of my age, my medical history and the fact that my workplace is not protecting us and unsanitary, I have chosen not to work. Am I eligible for unemployment in Illinois?

Ugh. I’m afraid to give you an answer on this one. If you are laid off, then you would certainly file for unemployment. Maybe just stay home for a while and see if your company files for aid to continue paying salaries? Are they paying you while you stay home?
But are you trying to be “too cute” here? Why not file for SS now, if you are at full retirement age — and get the guaranteed check. Under the circumstances it’s unlikely that you’ll work till 70. And unemployment is only for a relatively few months.
Better safe than sorry. This is exactly what SS was designed for!!
