Unemployment — max weeks of payment?

By Terry Savage on December 17, 2020 | Wild Card

In Illinois, do you know how many total weeks (including all available extensions) an eligible person can continue to collect unemployment? I seem to keep getting extensions and with the problems IDES is having, I am concerned about getting more weeks by mistake, and then having to pay back. Thank you…

Terry Says

Currently the maximum unemployment is 39 weeks. That is for basic unemployment benefits, and includes all extensions. BUT that could change if a new stimulus bill extends basic benefits for another 13 weeks. We should know this week. So keep track ofyour payments, and save some money if you have already received more than 39 weeks. But don’t try to get into the system to return money because that could mess up future extensions!
