Unemployment- over paid bill
I have just been notified that I owe back money due to being overpaid in unemployment. Do I have to pay this money back? They now have sent me a pay back plan for $2570.00 for payments of $257.00 each month. I had no idea I was being overpaid. Please let me know what I need to know. I am 68 and have not been able to be re employed due to the pandemic.

First, no you do not have to pay this back. But if you are still receiving unemployment benefits they will start taking it out of your current checks. (And if you’re owed a state tax refund, they can take that!) This is another exmaple of Illinois’ callous disregard for its citizens. The state knows the new Federal law does NOT REQUIRE that they collect overpayments the state made by mistake!
Get on the callback list and ask them to send a “waiver” that you will sign so they will stop trying to collect!
