Ask Terry Questions Unemployment reimbursement

Unemployment reimbursement

By Terry Savage on April 20, 2021 | Wild Card

I became ineligible for UI benefits when I started collecting a pension from the employer that laid me off. Initially payments were withheld, but after speaking with an agent I was paid for two of the weeks while I gathered more information. They now are requesting reimbursement of those 2 weeks. Do I have to repay this or would it be considered a mistaken payment and I should request a waiver?

That’s tricky. This is one of the few times I can say that you probably should repay the benefit. But if you can justify the dates — which you probably did for the agent –you can ask for a waiver. Not sure how they would come after you for repayment anyway. It always puzzles me that they can ask for money back yet thousands are waiting for well-deserved payments in the first place!
