Unemployment when boss closes business
Hi, Terry,
My boss of 30 years decided to retire and close his business( Medical office) at the end of the year. I have been applying for remote work as I don’t feel safe going into an unknown environment to work especially in the healthcare field at my age (63.5). Is this a viable reason to be able to stay on unemployment and not be expected to take a job that doesn’t meet my needs?
Terry Says
When you file for unemployment — and be sure your boss agrees that you are “laid off” — you are required to certify that you are looking for work. If age or health reasons limit the kind of jobs you can do, that is taken into account as part of the certification process. the real trick is getting “accepted” for unemployment in the first place! Start as soon as you are laid off and not receiving any paychecks.
