WEP and SS benefit
Hi Terry,
I am one of the people who fell under the WEP provision (worked 10 of my 50 years working in the IL university system). I’m 66, still working full time and have not begun collecting my SS benefit in part because I was anticipating the WEP reducing my benefit. I was reading your column in the Chicago Trib today and you advised that one could go to a commercial website to determine one’s full benefit. Is the benefit I find on the SSA website already building in my WEP? Thanks and love reading your column and hearing you on WGN!

If you have not notified SS about your public service pension, and if you have not started collecting it, the benefit calculation on their site likely — not for certain — does not include the WEP. They are going to have a lot of programming to do now that the WEP has been eliminated.
I still advise waiting until 70 to collect SS if you can.
